What Is TDEE?

TDEE stands for total daily energy expenditure. It is the estimated number of calories your body burns in a full day, including basic body functions, daily movement, exercise, and digestion. TDEE matters because it gives you a realistic starting point for planning food intake.

Your TDEE is not fixed. It changes when your body weight changes, when your activity level changes, and when your daily routine changes. Someone may burn fewer calories during a week of low movement and more calories during a week of hard training or physical work.

The parts of TDEE

  • Basal metabolic rate: energy used at rest.
  • Daily movement: walking, chores, work, and errands.
  • Exercise: planned workouts and sports.
  • Food digestion: energy used to process food.

Why estimates can be wrong

All calculators estimate. They cannot know your exact muscle mass, hormones, sleep, stress, or how much you move outside of exercise. That does not make them useless. It simply means you should use the estimate as a starting point and adjust based on real progress.

How to use TDEE

If your goal is maintenance, start around TDEE. If your goal is fat loss, eat below TDEE. If your goal is muscle gain, eat above TDEE while strength training. Try our calorie and macro calculator for an estimate.
