What Is BMR? Basal Metabolic Rate Explained
BMR stands for basal metabolic rate. It estimates how many calories your body burns at rest to keep essential systems working. Breathing, blood circulation, body temperature, brain function, and cell repair all require energy even when you are not exercising.
BMR is not the same as your daily calorie needs. Your full daily needs include movement, workouts, digestion, and normal daily tasks. That complete number is usually called TDEE.
Why BMR matters
Understanding BMR helps explain why two people of different sizes may need very different calorie targets. Larger bodies and people with more lean mass usually burn more energy at rest.
How to use it
Use BMR as a baseline, then estimate total daily energy expenditure based on activity. Our BMR calculator and daily calorie calculator can help you compare both numbers.
