Side-by-side comparison
| BMR | TDEE | |
|---|---|---|
| Meaning | Basal metabolic rate | Total daily energy expenditure |
| Includes activity? | No | Yes, through an estimate |
| Main use | Understanding resting energy | Planning maintenance or goal calories |
| Direct eating target? | Usually no | A starting maintenance estimate |
What BMR tells you
BMR predicts the energy required for essential functions at rest. The BMR calculator uses weight, height, age, and sex in the Mifflin–St Jeor equation. It cannot directly observe muscle mass, hormones, illness, or medication.
What TDEE adds
TDEE begins with resting energy and adds the effect of activity. A sedentary factor may add about 20 percent to BMR, while higher factors represent increasingly active routines. The multiplier also indirectly accounts for digestion and everyday movement.
One BMR, several possible TDEE values
BMR estimate: 1,600 calories
| Sedentary × 1.2 | 1,920 estimated TDEE |
| Light × 1.375 | 2,200 estimated TDEE |
| Moderate × 1.55 | 2,480 estimated TDEE |
| Very active × 1.725 | 2,760 estimated TDEE |
The example shows why eating at BMR is not the same as eating at maintenance.
Which number should you use?
Use BMR when you want to understand resting energy or compare formulas. Use TDEE when planning an intake for maintenance, fat loss, or gain. Neither number is a prescription; TDEE should be compared with the real trend.
Do not treat BMR as a required calorie floor
BMR is a physiological estimate, not a universal minimum-intake rule. Individual nutrition needs require more context.
When the numbers seem wrong
First check units, age, and activity selection. Next consider whether a physical job, changing step count, or food-tracking gaps explain the difference. If weight change is unexpected or accompanied by symptoms, seek professional evaluation rather than repeatedly editing calculator inputs.
Frequently asked questions
Can TDEE ever be lower than BMR?
A valid TDEE estimate should be higher because total daily expenditure includes resting energy plus other activity.
Should weight-loss calories be below BMR?
Do not use BMR alone to decide that. Very low intake and individual medical needs require qualified guidance.
Why are BMR calculators different?
They may use different equations, rounding, units, or assumptions. Check which formula each tool identifies.
Which number changes more with exercise?
TDEE changes directly with activity. BMR may change gradually with body size and composition but does not add workout calories.
